New Lambert Intensified CCD Day/Night Camera

Leutingewolde, The Netherlands - Oct. 19, 2006…Lambert Instruments announced today the introduction of a new auto-gating surveillance ICCD camera featuring the highest sensitivity and resolution. The new camera incorporates a Photonis-DEP XR-5 Image Intensifier.

An Intensified CCD (ICCD) camera is an electronic camera, analogue or digital, equipped with an intensified CCD as image sensor. The sensor uses an image intensifier that is fiber optically coupled to the CCD chip to increase the sensitivity down to single photon level. An ICCD camera allows image acquisition at very low light levels over a wide range of spectral response and at relatively high speed. Single photons can be detected and discriminated from CCD noise. Ultra high-speed phenomena can be captured by using the intensifier as a fast shutter (gating).

The intensifier has an 18mm input and is coupled to a 2/3 inch interline transfer CCD image sensor via tapered fiber optics. The camera produces a standard CCIR video signal. The intensifier is equipped with automatic gain and gating control enabling 24 hours day/night operation.

The movie (download below) shows an overnight recording of a field of grass with a horse. It starts by day (short gating), but continuous during night (long gating). A man flashes his torch in order to see where he is walking. In those parts of the movie you clearly see that the auto-gating shortens, because the parts of the field of grass, that are not lighted by the torch, are much darker.
