Lambert Instruments specialises in the development of complete imaging systems that make use of image Intensifiers with or without gating or modulation. Systems are available for fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) and other high-speed imaging applications. Products include:

LIFA System

Lambert Instruments has introduced a turnkey system for FLIM (Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy). An important application is the detection of FRET in the study of interactions between protein molecules in living cells. LIFA systems have been installed at Institutes for Cancer Research. The scientists are impressed by the performance of the LIFA. The system is making use of powerful LED’s of various wavelengths eliminating the need for a troublesome laser set-up. The LIFA is attached to a standard wide-field fluorescence microscope and works in the frequency domain. The excitation light and the sensitivity of the intensified CCD camera are both modulated at frequencies up to 100MHz. Images are acquired at a number of phase difference values between excitation and detection.

From these images the phase shift of the emission light relative to the excitation light is extracted in every pixel. From these phase shift data the lifetimes are computed and displayed in a false colour image. In addition the lifetime values are computed from the modulation data. Changes in fluorescence efficiency as caused by bleaching are not accompanied by changes in fluorescence lifetime. The key component of the system is the modulated image intensifier, which is offered as a separate product (II18MD), to users who built their own FLIM system.
